The Association for Universal Reiki Awakening was founded on a simple but profound truth: Reiki is not only a personal practice—it is a global force of awakening. We exist to support this evolution by bringing practitioners together into a unified field of intention, service, and light.
We are honored members of the Reiki Healing Association, The International Reiki Organization and The Center for Reiki Research, and we commit to abiding by the highest ethical principles in practice and in teaching.
Why we exist
Reiki is frequently understood simply as a method for relaxation. While stress reduction is a natural benefit, the traditional Japanese system founded by Mikao Usui—Usui Reiki Ryoho—is a comprehensive path of spiritual cultivation, mindfulness, and self-refinement.
The Association for Universal Reiki Awakening serves as an educational resource to bring clarity to this profound practice. By shifting the focus away from modern adaptations and returning to foundational Japanese roots, we help practitioners develop a stable, disciplined, and enduring practice.
Our Guiding Principles

Our Lineage and Integrity
The Association for Universal Reiki Awakening was established with a singular objective: to provide clear, accurate education on the traditional system of Usui Reiki Ryoho.
The original teachings of Mikao Usui emphasize that personal well-being and spiritual clarity are not passive achievements. Instead, they are the result of steady, daily practice anchored in the Reiki Precepts (Gokai) and traditional Reiki meditations, primarily Hatsurei-ho.
Our work is grounded in the belief that effective teaching requires an egoless approach—one that prioritizes the lineage and the practice over any individual instructor. The foundational framework of this work is drawn from three core texts written to guide students through varying stages of development: Healing the Self and the World, The Great Bright Light, and The Refined Vessel (see books page).

About the Founder
Daniel Payne, RMT is an Usui Reiki Master Teacher dedicated to restoring Reiki to its original depth—an embodied spiritual practice rooted in presence, ethical living, and compassionate service. Known for his clarity, historical rigor, and community‑centered approach, Daniel teaches in the lineage of Mikao Usui, Chujiro Hayashi, and Hawayo Takata.
Based in Chicago, his work focuses on helping practitioners cultivate hara, embody the Gokai, and experience Reiki as a lifelong path rather than a "weekend technique."
Daniel's Reiki lineage began in South Korea in 2007–2008, when he was trained and attuned by his first Master teacher, Lee Min‑ho. Lee was trained and attuned by a direct student of Chujiro Hayashi, and he passed this lineage to Daniel. His focus was the inner work and spiritual discipline at the heart of Reiki practice. Years later, Daniel completed a refresher of all three levels of Usui Reiki Ryōhō with Lisa Powers, whose lineage traces through Hawayo Takata.
Daniel is a member of the Reiki Healing Association, The International Reiki Organization, and The Center for Reiki Research.

In Usui Reiki, lineage is the thread that connects each practitioner back to Mikao Usui, the founder of the system. It shows how the teachings were passed from teacher to student, preserving the integrity of the methods, the attunement process, and the spirit of the practice.
